The Super Mario Star Fox Movie - 2026, April 7th
Yeah this movie sucks.
Honest to god, the best way to describe it is simply it sucked. I'm honestly not sure where to start. It was that bad (although it has been a decent bit since I wrote a proper review or any review beyond just "I like this"). The conflict could've been resolved almost exactly the same way if Mario, Luigi and Yoshi weren't in it. Only Peach and Fox Mccloud are really needed. On the topic of Fox I'm not against his inclusion he's kinda carrying the movie bringing in the most humour although his inclusion is interesting as he feels like he's supposed to be "oh hey I know that guy" reference that is lost on bulk of the audience his latest "new" release was almost exactly 10 years ago with Star Fox Guard on the Wii U, there was Star Fox 2 which released almost 9 years ago on snesonline but the average kid won't recognize that as being "new" (assuming it's not older than them) with the only chance of them knowing about Star Fox being through smash additionally I do feel like he was lost on the parents watching the movie with their kid(s), I asked my mom if she even knew what it was after the movie and she said no. This statement can be applied to most of the references in the movie the average person watching this movie has no idea who R.O.B. is and that his joke is that the actual toy is very slow same applies to both Game & Watch and Pikmin they definitely should of kept the cameo characters a secret prior to release it was very cool to see Game & Watch show up and I expect it would feel similar with the others. The same thing applies to the Mario references. Most people don't know what a Super Scope is and you expect people to be able to spot a reference to Yoshi's Safari. I only noticed it because I'm far from normal. This even goes for more normal references such as warp star SFX would the average person be able to identify that probably not or the three or four "Do a barrel roll." references I don't think most people are getting them. I feel like the best way to describe all the references in this movie is to compare it to the opening of the 750th Simpsons episode where they tried to cram 750 characters into it as a joke except it's done unironically and feels like it's the last thing Mario to ever come out.

The pacing sucked, it felt like 'Rosalina gets kidnapped, Mario and Luigi find Yoshi, Luigi and Yoshi sing That's Amore at Mario, Peach and Toad go out alone, Fox shows up, Bowser gets beaten up and credits roll. It was way too fast paced, an extra 30 minutes might've helped (Don't act like 2 hours is too long for a kids movie Spirited Away is 2 hours long). With how short and fast paced it is it really makes it feel like Mario Galaxy got the short end of the stick barely being in the plot despite the movie being named after it.
Speaking of the plot, this plot sucked. As mentioned previously Mario and Luigi are functionally irrelevant to the plot. The only character to have even a slight bit of growth is Bowser and they instantly walk back on it in a way that makes no sense. Rosalina and Peach being sisters is dumb and makes Rosalina feel less unique. Also Peach doesn't need anything more special with her. Before anyone says anything about kids movies not needing "plot" go watch Spirited Away it's not even my favourite Ghibli movie or like any old Disney movie. Honestly I thought I would be talking more about the plot but it's very hard to talk about something that doesn't exist.
Random complaints that don't fit anywhere and are nitpicky.
They get how the Mini Mushroom works wrong. When you get hit as mini you die not go big. You know how in the first movie when they get to the big fight we get a cool fight where Mario and Luigi team up with the super star and kick Bowser's ass, yeah in the second movie it goes like this: A 2v2 between the brothers and the Bowsers, Luigi gets ahold of Bowser Jr.'s paint brush and makes Game & Watch who hits a judge 9 on one of the Bowsers the paint brush then creates the dragon from Odyssey which eats Bowser Jr. and then Mario gets the Red Star Ohkos the dragon with it and saves Bowser Jr. Yeah pretty lame.
You know "#soretro" things where it's poorly matched sprites to try to invoke nostalgia the greatest sin of these is when you mix match sprites especially when you have sprites of the same object that match yeah this movie does this like Mario Maker is right there you have sprites you can use for it why are you mixing smb1 and smw sprites together.
